## The Parents
My parents arrived at 12:17 AM.
I knew the exact time because the clock on the station wall — a round, white-faced, government-issue clock with a second hand that moved in the particular stutter-step of cheap quartz movements — was the only thing in the room that I could look at without feeling the walls close in. I had been watching the second hand for forty-seven minutes, counting its rotations, using the rhythm as an anchor against the rising tide of panic that was filling my chest like the water that had flooded our Vashi flat during the 2020 monsoon — slowly, steadily, the level rising with the terrible patience of a force that had nowhere to go but up.
I heard them before I saw them. My mother's voice — not the calm, measured voice of Deepa Joshi, schoolteacher, the voice that explained photosynthesis and the periodic table with the patience of a woman who believed that all knowledge was accessible if the explanation was clear enough. This was the other voice. The voice that existed beneath the teacher's voice, the voice that had been suppressed by years of composure and profession and the particular Maharashtrian middle-class conditioning that treated public emotion as a failure of character. This voice was raw. It was loud. It cut through the station's tubelight hum and the constable's indifference and the green walls' bureaucratic silence like a blade through paper.
"Where is my daughter? Where is she? You cannot — she is a minor! You cannot keep her without—"
"Ma'am, please calm down—"
"Do NOT tell me to calm down. I am a mother. My child is in your station at midnight. You will take me to her NOW."
The door opened. My mother filled the doorway — not physically, she was a small woman, five-foot-two, the kind of woman who disappeared in crowds — but emotionally. Her presence was enormous. She was wearing the nightgown she slept in — the cotton one with the blue flowers, the one she had ironed that morning, the ironing now irrelevant because the nightgown was wrinkled from the car ride and from the specific bodily tension of a woman who had received a phone call that began with "Mrs. Joshi, this is the Panchgani Police Station" and who had been, since that moment, in a state of controlled detonation.
"Nishi." She crossed the room. Knelt in front of the bench. Took my handcuffed wrists in her hands — the handcuffs cold, her hands warm, the contrast a summary of everything that was wrong. She looked at the handcuffs. Her face did the thing — the processing sequence of a mother encountering something that should not exist, the recalibration from fear to fury that happened in the space between two heartbeats.
"Take these off," she said. Not to me. To the room. To whoever was responsible for the steel on her daughter's wrists.
The constable looked at Kamble, who had appeared in the doorway behind my mother. Kamble nodded. The constable unlocked the handcuffs. The sensation of the metal leaving my skin was not relief — it was the awareness of where the metal had been, the ghost of the pressure, the red marks on my wrists that would fade in hours but that I would feel for months.
My father was behind Kamble. Bhushan Joshi in his nightclothes — the white banian and the checked lungi, the outfit of a man who had been pulled from sleep and who had not thought to change because the phone call had eliminated all considerations that were not the immediate consideration of his daughter in a police station. His face was grey — the particular grey of fear, the colour that blood retreating from the skin's surface produced, the physiological signature of a man whose body was preparing for fight or flight and who was, in the fluorescent lighting of the Panchgani Police Station, doing neither.
"What happened?" he asked. To me. Directly. The voice was steady — steadier than I expected, the voice of a branch manager who had been trained to maintain composure during crises, even if the crisis was not a loan default but his daughter in handcuffs.
"They found something in the car. A bag. Under the passenger seat. It's not mine, Baba. I swear to God it's not mine."
"A bag of what?"
Kamble answered. "A substance that has been sent for laboratory testing. The preliminary assessment is consistent with a controlled substance under Schedule II of the NDPS Act."
"My daughter doesn't use drugs," my mother said. The sentence was flat. Final. The sentence of a woman who was stating a fact rather than making an argument, the way you would say the earth orbits the sun — not as an opinion but as a condition of reality that was not open to discussion.
"The substance was found in the vehicle," Kamble said.
"Then someone put it there."
"That is what your daughter has stated. Unfortunately, without evidence of who placed the substance—"
"She is seventeen years old. She is a Class XII student. Her school record is spotless. She has never been in trouble. She has never—"
"Ma'am. I understand your distress. But the law is the law. Possession is possession, regardless of the possessor's age or academic record."
My father stepped forward. He was not a physically imposing man — average height, average build, the body of a banker who sat at a desk for nine hours a day and who had not exercised since the company cricket match in 2019. But something in his posture changed — the spine straightened, the shoulders squared, the chin lifted. The posture of a man who was about to deploy the one resource he had in this situation: the institutional authority of a person who understood how systems worked and who was prepared to work the system.
"I want to speak with your superior officer," he said. "I want a copy of the First Information Report. I want the name of the testing laboratory and the chain of custody documentation for the substance. And I want a lawyer. If my daughter's rights have been violated in any way—"
"Mr. Joshi," Kamble said. The voice was smooth. Patient. The voice of a person who had been through this conversation many times and who knew its trajectory — the initial shock, the denial, the anger, the demand for authorities, and then, inevitably, the exhaustion that made parents amenable to the alternative. "Your daughter's rights have been fully respected. She was informed of her right to silence and legal representation. She was not questioned without consent. The detention has followed proper procedure."
"Then why was she in handcuffs?"
"Standard procedure for NDPS detentions. The cuffs have been removed at your request."
My father looked at me. The look was long — the duration of a look between a parent and a child when the parent is trying to determine the truth and the child is trying to communicate it, the visual negotiation that families conducted in moments of crisis. He was looking for evidence — not the legal kind, but the parental kind. The evidence of guilt or innocence that existed in a daughter's eyes, in the way she held her body, in the particular quality of her voice when she said it's not mine.
He found what he was looking for. I knew this because his jaw tightened — the tightening of a man who had looked at his daughter and seen innocence and who was now, with the fury of a father whose innocent child was in a police station at midnight, preparing to fight.
"We're taking her home," he said.
"I'm afraid that's not possible tonight," Kamble said. "The FIR has been filed. The magistrate will need to grant bail. This will happen tomorrow morning—"
"You are not keeping my daughter in a police station overnight."
"Mr. Joshi, the law requires—"
"The law also requires that a minor detained under the NDPS Act be produced before the Juvenile Justice Board within twenty-four hours, not held in a police station lockup. My daughter is seventeen. She is a juvenile in the eyes of the law. If you are not aware of this provision, I suggest you consult your superior."
Silence. The specific silence of a room where someone has said something accurate and the person it was said to is recalculating.
Kamble's expression did not change — the wall held — but something behind it shifted. A flicker. The flicker of a person who had misjudged her adversary, who had expected the middle-class parents to be overwhelmed and compliant and who was discovering that Bhushan Joshi, whatever his failures as a husband, was not a man who would leave his daughter in a cell.
"I'll make a call," Kamble said.
She left the room. My mother pulled me into an embrace — the arms tight, the nightgown soft against my face, the scent of Ponds face cream and Neem soap and the specific, irreplaceable smell of my mother's skin, the smell that meant safety, the smell that I had been inhaling since the day I was born and that was, in that moment, the only thing standing between me and the panic that had been building for hours.
"It's okay," she said. "It's going to be okay."
"Aai, I didn't—"
"I know. I know you didn't. I know."
My father stood at the doorway. He was listening to Kamble's phone call — the words muffled by distance and the wall, but the tone audible: the tone of a subordinate explaining a complication to a superior, the tone that Indian bureaucracy produced when the procedure had hit an obstacle and the obstacle had a name and a knowledge of the Juvenile Justice Act.
At 1:15 AM, we left. The bail was provisional — arranged by phone with a magistrate who had been woken and who had, with the irritated efficiency of a judicial officer accustomed to midnight calls, granted conditional release pending the hearing.
The conditions: I was to remain in Panchgani. I was not to leave the district. I was to surrender my passport (I did not have a passport, but the condition was standard). I was to report to the police station every Monday.
We drove home in silence. The Dzire — not the evidence Dzire, which had been impounded, but my father's borrowed vehicle from a colleague at the bank — navigated the Mahabaleshwar Road in the dark. My mother sat in the back with me, her arm around my shoulders, the weight of her body against mine an anchor that kept me in the present when the present was a place I did not want to be.
My father drove. His hands were on the wheel at ten and two — the driving school position, the position of a man who was maintaining control of the one thing he could control, the vehicle, while everything else — the marriage, the daughter, the life they had moved to Panchgani to fix — spun in the dark beyond the headlights' reach.
At the cottage, I went to my room. My mother followed. She sat on the bed while I changed — the party clothes peeled off, the cotton nightdress pulled on, the transformation from a girl at a party to a girl who had been arrested and released and who was now standing in her bedroom in a hill station cottage while the mango tree's branches scraped the window in the wind.
"Tell me everything," Aai said.
I told her. Everything — the Wai road, Kamble's messages, the locker note, the cottage visit, the parking area, the powder in the car. I told her about the texts, the photograph of the Dzire, the offer of the rehabilitation programme at the Sahyadri Centre. I told her what I had not told anyone — that Kamble was not investigating me but targeting me, that the evidence was fabricated, that the entire sequence from the first sighting on the Wai road to the arrest on the plateau was a construction.
My mother listened. She did not interrupt. She did not cry. She listened with the attention of a teacher hearing a student's explanation — carefully, completely, withholding judgment until the full account was delivered.
When I finished, she was quiet for a long time. The kind of quiet that is not absence but presence — the quiet of a mind working, processing, building the structure of a response.
"We need a lawyer," she said. "A good one. Not a Panchgani lawyer. A Pune lawyer. Someone who knows the NDPS Act and the Juvenile Justice Board and who is not afraid of the police."
"Baba said—"
"Your father said the right things tonight. He was brave. He will continue to be brave, and I will make sure of it." She paused. "Nishi. This woman — Kamble. She came to our house. She sat in our living room. She looked at our photographs and our furniture and our life. And she decided that she could take our daughter and put her in a place. This is what she does. I am sure of it. We are not the first family she has done this to."
"How do you know?"
"Because the system she described — the offer, the rehabilitation programme, the alternative to charges — is too smooth. Too rehearsed. This is not a procedure she invented for you. This is a pipeline. And we are going to find out where it leads."
My mother stood. Kissed my forehead. The kiss was firm — the pressure of lips on skin that communicated not tenderness but determination, the kiss of a woman who had been surprised by a threat and who was now, with the methodical fury of a schoolteacher who had discovered that the system was failing her students, preparing to fight.
"Sleep," she said.
"I can't."
"Try."
She left. I lay on the bed. The ceiling was white. The mango tree scratched the window. The clock on the nightstand said 2:03 AM.
I did not sleep. I lay in the dark and thought about Aarav — standing in the parking area, held back by the constable, his face the face of a boy who had been powerless and who had hated the powerlessness with a fury that was visible even in the dark.
My phone was impounded. I could not message him. I could not tell him I was home, I was safe, I was scared but I was home. I could not tell him that his 6:47 AM text — the text that arrived every morning, the text that had become as essential as the morning's first breath — would not be received tomorrow because my phone was in an evidence bag in a police station and the morning was already ruined.
I lay in the dark and thought about the stars above Table Land, where we had kissed, where the bonfire had been warm, where the night had been perfect.
And I thought about Kamble's offer. The Sahyadri Centre. The rehabilitation programme. The alternative to charges.
The alternative was not an alternative. The alternative was a destination.
And the destination was the building on the hill with the concertina wire.
I did not sleep.
The mango tree scratched the window all night.
