## Chapter 14: Arrival
Meera landed on sand.
Not the golden sand of the bookshop floor. Real sand, wet and gritty, a sand that had been shaped by tides and storms and the specific patience of an ocean that had been grinding rock into powder since before humans existed. The sand was in her mouth, her nose, between her fingers. It tasted of salt and seaweed and the mineral tang of a place that was very, very far from Mumbai.
She spat. Coughed. Pushed herself to her knees.
The beach stretched in both directions, a crescent of pale sand bounded by rocks on one side and a wall of jungle on the other. The jungle was impossibly green, the green of a place where rain fell every day and the warm sun was a furnace and everything grew with the desperate speed of things competing for light. Palm trees leaned toward the cold water like devotees bowing to the sea. Behind them, the forest rose in layers; undergrowth, canopy, the occasional tree so tall that its crown disappeared into the sky.
The sea was calm. Turquoise near the shore, deepening to navy at the horizon, where the cold water met the sky in a line so clean it looked drawn. And on the cold water, anchored in a natural harbour perhaps a kilometre offshore, was a ship.
A sailing ship. Wooden. Two masts. Square-rigged. The kind of ship that existed in history books and pirates-of-the-Caribbean movies and the distinct imagination of boys who read Treasure Island.
"Oh," Meera said.
"Yeah," Danny said. He was lying face-down in the sand beside her, his Lego-building hands gripping the beach as if it might disappear. "Oh pretty much covers it."
They looked at each other. Two thirteen-year-olds from Mumbai, wearing school uniforms, sitting on a beach in a book. Danny's face was a complex mixture of terror, bewilderment, and the specific irritation of someone who'd been promised that chasing a pigeon would lead to a bookshop, not a tropical island.
"So this is Treasure Island," Danny said.
"This is Treasure Island."
"And we're inside a book."
"We're inside a book."
"And that's a pirate ship."
"That's the Hispaniola. It's a schooner, technically."
"You said you hadn't read the book."
"I said I'd seen the Muppet version. The Muppet version has a schooner."
Danny stood up. Brushed sand off his uniform. Looked left. Looked right. Looked at the jungle. Looked at the ship.
"What's the plan?" he asked.
"Find Kabir."
"Great. How? This island is, what, five miles across? With jungle and pirates and a nine-year-old boy who could be anywhere?"
"We find the stockade. That's where the good guys are. Captain Smollett's party. If Kabir knows the story, he'll have gone there."
"How do you know about the stockade?"
"Danny, I've seen four different adaptations of Treasure Island. The anime, the Muppet movie, the BBC series, and the one from the '90s with—"
"Okay, okay. Where's the stockade?"
Meera looked at the island. She didn't have a map; the treasure map was in the story, in the possession of the characters, and she was not a character. She was a visitor. A tourist in a narrative that had been running for a hundred and forty years.
But she had something better than a map. She had instinct — the instinct of a girl who'd grown up navigating Mumbai, a city that was itself a labyrinth, a place where directions were given not by street names but by landmarks, where "turn left at the chai-wallah" was a legitimate navigational instruction.
"The stockade is on the eastern side of the island, near a spring," she said. "The harbour where the ship is anchored is on the south. So if we go—" She oriented herself by the warm sun, which was high and to the west. "That way. Through the jungle. Inland and north."
"Through the pirate-infested jungle."
"Through the pirate-infested jungle. Yes."
Danny looked at the jungle. The jungle looked back; dense, dark, full of sounds that suggested things with teeth and intentions.
"My mom used to read me this book," he said. It came out gently: the same calm voice from the bookshop, the one that wasn't snarky or defensive. The voice of a boy talking about a woman who'd been dead for six years. "She'd do all the voices. Long John Silver sounded like her Rajkot uncle. Ben Gunn sounded like the watchman at our building."
"What did Jim Hawkins sound like?"
"Like me. She always read Jim in my voice." He paused. "She said I was her little adventurer."
Meera didn't say anything. There was nothing to say, no comfort adequate for the loss of a mother, no words that could fill the space between a boy and the woman who'd read him bedtime stories. But she put her hand on his shoulder. The touch was brief. Danny flinched, as always; but she felt the flinch soften, the muscle relax, the boy allow, for one moment, the contact.
"Let's go find your brother," Danny said.
They walked into the jungle.
The jungle was not still.
It was, in fact, the loudest place Meera had ever been. Louder than Marine Drive during rush hour, louder than the Ganpati visarjan procession, louder than the time Danny had accidentally set off the building's fire alarm at 3 AM (a story he maintained was an experiment, not an accident).
Birds screamed in the canopy, parrots, Meera thought, though the sounds were more primal than any parrot she'd heard at the zoo. Insects buzzed at frequencies that made her teeth vibrate. Frogs croaked with the rhythmic insistence of tabla players warming up. And beneath it all, the constant, low hum of the jungle itself — the sound of a million organisms living and dying and competing for space in a world where space was the most valuable currency.
They walked for an hour. The terrain was brutal: steep ridges, deep gullies, streams that had to be forded (Danny slipped on a rock and went waist-deep, producing a vocabulary that would have impressed a sailor), and everywhere, the vegetation pressing in, the vines grabbing at their clothes, the undergrowth tripping their feet.
"This is terrible," Danny said, pulling a thorn from his rough hand. "I hate nature. I hate trees. I hate this island. I hate Robert Louis Stevenson."
"Stevenson died in 1894. In Samoa."
"Good. I hope a tree fell on him."
"He died of a brain haemorrhage."
"I hope a tree caused it."
Despite the complaining, and Danny complained the way other people breathed, continuously and without conscious effort; he moved through the jungle with a competence that surprised Meera. He found paths where she saw none. He identified the easiest routes over ridges. He even, at one point, fashioned a walking stick from a fallen branch with a speed and precision that suggested his Lego-building skills translated to real-world engineering.
"How are you so good at this?" Meera asked.
"Good at what?"
"Navigation. Pathfinding. You've been leading us through the jungle for an hour and we haven't gotten lost."
Danny shrugged. The shrug of someone who didn't want to explain. Then, because the jungle was large and stillness was uncomfortable:
"Lego," he said.
"Lego?"
"When you build a Lego city, you have to understand spatial relationships. Which building goes where. How streets connect. The road smelled of hot tar and exhaust and the sweet rot of overripe fruit from the vendor cart. How to move through a space efficiently. It's the same skill: reading terrain, finding routes, understanding how a physical space is organized." He paused. "My dad's an architect. He says I think in three dimensions."
"Your dad's right."
"Don't tell him that. He's insufferable enough."
They crested a ridge and stopped. Below them, in a clearing on the eastern slope of the island, was a structure.
The stockade.
A log house, square, solid, its walls built of heavy timber, surrounded by a fence of sharpened stakes. A Union Jack hung from a pole above the roof, limp in the windless air. Inside the fence, visible through gaps in the stakes, figures moved — people, small at this distance, going about the business of survival.
"That's it," Danny whispered.
"That's it."
"And Kabir's in there?"
"If he's smart, which he is, yes."
"How do we get in? We can't just walk up to the heavy gate. They've got muskets. They're in the middle of a pirate siege. We're strangers in weird clothes."
"We're children in school uniforms. We're not exactly threatening."
"Meera, this is the eighteenth century. Children in the eighteenth century worked in factories and joined navies and died of diseases we've never heard of. Being a child is not a safety guarantee."
He was right. Meera looked at the stockade and thought about Noor's rules. They couldn't change the story. They were visitors, not characters. They needed to find Kabir, find the disruption, fix the story, and get out.
"We go in openly," she said. "We walk down, announce ourselves, and ask to see Kabir."
"And if they shoot us?"
"They won't shoot children."
"You have a very optimistic view of the eighteenth century."
"Danny. We walked into a magical bookshop, chased a pigeon through moving streets, drank chai with a woman who talks to birds, and read ourselves into a novel. At this point, optimism is the only reasonable strategy."
Danny stared at her. Then, despite everything, the jungle, the fear, the impossible situation: he laughed. Not a big laugh. Not a long one. But real.
"Fine," he said. "But if I get shot, I'm haunting you."
"You'd make a terrible ghost."
"I'd make an EXCELLENT ghost. I'd rearrange your furniture. I'd hide your phone charger. I'd sing Bollywood songs off-key at 3 AM."
"That's basically what you do alive."
They walked down the ridge toward the stockade. Out of the jungle, into the clearing, across the open ground where the grass was trampled and the earth was churned from the morning's assault. The dawn smelled of wet earth and the faint sweetness of neem flowers opening. They walked slowly, hands visible, the way Meera had seen people approach checkpoints in films — the universal body language of we're not dangerous, please don't shoot us.
"HALT!" The shout came from the stockade wall. A musket barrel appeared through a gap in the logs, pointed at them with the exact precision of someone who knew how to use it.
"We're children!" Meera called. "We're looking for Kabir! Kabir Mehra!"
A pause. The musket didn't move.
Then a face appeared above the rough wall; young, sunburnt, freckled, the face of a boy who'd been inside the story from the beginning.
"You know Kabir?" Jim Hawkins asked.
"He's my brother."
Jim studied them. Then turned and called over his shoulder:
"Kabir! There are two more of you!"
The stockade gate opened. And there, standing in the gateway, wearing a school uniform that had been white five days ago and was now the colour of mud and blood and tropical adventure, was Kabir.
His face, when he saw Meera; did something that Meera would remember for the rest of her life. It went from surprise to relief to joy to tears in approximately half a second, the emotions moving across his nine-year-old features like clouds across a sky, each one distinct and each one real.
"Didi!" He ran to her. Not walked: ran, the run of a boy who'd been inside a book for three days and had been brave and observant and steady and had not, until this moment, allowed himself to feel how scared he was.
Meera caught him. The hug was total. Her arms around his small body, his face pressed against her shoulder, his school shirt (what remained of it) rough against her chin. He was shaking. The trembling of relief, of safety, of that emotional collapse that happened when someone you loved arrived and the bravery you'd been performing became unnecessary.
"I'm here," Meera said. "I'm here."
"I know," Kabir said. "I know you're here."
Danny stood behind them. Watching. The specific discomfort of a boy who didn't do hugs and emotions and the messy, physical vocabulary of family love. But also, and this was new, this was something he wouldn't have felt six months ago, a warmth. Small, unfamiliar, like a pilot light in a furnace that hadn't been used in years.
Kabir pulled back. Wiped his eyes. Looked at Danny.
"You came too?"
"Your sister dragged me."
"Thank you."
"Don't mention it. Literally. Don't mention it. I have a reputation to maintain."
Kabir smiled. a smile from someone who was, for the first time in three days, not alone.
"I found it," Kabir said. "The disruption. I know what's wrong with the story."
"Already?" Danny blinked.
"I've had three days. And a very perceptive cat."
"Cat?"
MEOW.
Tukaram appeared in the gateway. White and orange, six-toed, magnificent, his green eyes regarding the new arrivals with the imperious disdain of a cat who had seen the inside of a novel and was not impressed.
"That's Tukaram," Kabir said.
"He's beautiful," Meera said.
"He bites," Kabir warned.
"He'll fit right in with our family, then," Danny said.
And despite the pirates and the jungle and the failing story engine and the ticking clock, three days left, maybe less — they all stood in the gateway of the stockade and, for one moment, felt something that was stronger than fear.
They felt like they might actually pull this off.
