## Chapter 21: Khazane Ka Jazeera

The walk home was quiet.

Not the subdued of the jungle. That had been the quiet of a world holding its breath, of things waiting to happen, of a story building toward its climax. This was the quiet of aftermath. The calm of three children walking through the evening streets of Mumbai, carrying someone that no one would believe.

The bookshop door closed behind them with the sound of the brass bell; the sound that had started everything, the sound of a door between worlds opening and closing. The lane was ordinary again. The buildings were where they'd always been. The moving streets had stopped moving. The air carried the mixed scent of petrol fumes and jasmine from the garland stall. Rashida, apparently, had restored the neighbourhood to its default configuration.

They walked through Kala Ghoda. Past the art galleries with their closing-time lights. Past the cafes where couples drank cold coffee and argued about films. Past the street vendor selling vada pav from a cart that smelled of oil and green chutney and the specific Mumbai fragrance of food cooked on a flame in the open air.

Kabir held Tukaram. The cat was heavy; heavier than he remembered, or perhaps Kabir was weaker than he'd been five days ago, his arms thin from island rations and his body running on a fumes that was only now, in the ordinary light of the ordinary world, beginning to feel real.

Meera walked beside him. Close, closer than she usually walked, the distance between siblings having been recalibrated by the experience of separation. She'd almost lost him. The knowledge of that near-loss was still in her body, in the tightness of her shoulders, in the way her eyes kept checking that he was there, in the hand that rested on his back, light, the touch of someone making sure.

Danny walked on the other side. His hands were in his pockets, the default Danny position, a boy who kept his hands to himself and his feelings deeper. But something was different. His shoulders were lower. His jaw was unclenched. The specific tension that Danny carried, the tension of losing his mother and gaining a family he hadn't asked for — had loosened. Not disappeared. Loosened. As if the adventure had, like a good cry or a long run, released some pressure from a system that had been overfull for six years.

They caught a taxi at the Regal Cinema stand. The driver, a man whose moustache suggested he'd been driving since before any of them were born; looked at them in the rearview mirror with the exact expression of a Mumbai taxi driver who'd seen everything and was still capable of surprise.

"Kya hua, baba? Fancy dress competition?"

Kabir looked down at himself. The school uniform. What remained of it. The shirt was brown with dirt and salt and the ink of living text. The tie was a strip. The shorts were torn at both knees. His shoes had lost their laces somewhere on Treasure Island, and his feet were bare and calloused and bore the marks of four days walking on fictional terrain.

Meera was no better. her uniform salt-stained, her hair a disaster, her shoes full of sand that belonged in a book. Danny's uniform was intact (he'd been in the story for less time) but his hands were cut from brambles and his face had that redness of someone who'd been in tropical sun without sunscreen.

"Long story, uncle," Meera said.

"You kids these days. In my time, we came home dirty from playing cricket, not from—" He gestured at them, unable to categorize the specific type of dishevelment they presented.

"Malabar Hill, please," Danny said.

The taxi moved through evening traffic. The city pressed against the windows, the lights, the horns, the ten million people living their ten million lives in a place that was, compared to Treasure Island, enormously, beautifully, overwhelmingly real. The smells came through the open windows; exhaust and flowers and frying onions and the sea, the Arabian Sea, Mumbai's sea, the sea that wasn't fictional, that didn't exist between the covers of a book, that was simply and magnificently there.

Kabir pressed his face against the cold glass. The city reflected in it — Kabir's face ghosted over Marine Drive, the lights of the Queen's Necklace shining through his features. He looked like a boy superimposed on a city. A reader superimposed on a story.

"Didi?"

"Hmm?"

"Do you think Jim is okay?"

Meera considered this. "The story ended the way it was supposed to. Jim finds the treasure in Ben Gunn's cave, they load it on the ship, they sail home. Silver escapes: he always escapes."

"But is he okay? Not as a character. As a... person."

Meera looked at her brother. The boy who'd befriended a fictional character, who'd sat on a rock above a bay with a boy from 1765 and talked about stories and endings, who'd asked the question that all devoted readers ask: are they okay when I close the book?

"I think," Meera said, "that Jim is okay the way all good characters are okay. He lives in the story. And the story is running. As long as people read Treasure Island, Jim is on that island, finding the treasure, having the adventure. He doesn't end when you close the book. He just... waits. Until the next reader opens it."

"That's nice," Kabir said.

"It's also very sad."

"Most nice things are."

Danny, on Kabir's other side, was looking out his own window. The Malabar Hill skyline was approaching; the tall buildings, the expensive apartments, the penthouse where three children who hadn't chosen each other were learning, slowly and imperfectly, to be a family.

"My mom," Danny said. The words came out without preamble; no introduction, no context, just the words, the way you'd say them if you'd been holding them for six years and they'd finally found an exit. "My mom would have loved this."

Nobody asked him to explain. Nobody needed to.

"She would have loved the bookshop. The cats. Guddi — she would have loved Guddi. She would have loved the singing." He paused. "She would have been terrible at the adventure. She couldn't walk five minutes without complaining about her knees. But she would have loved it."

"She sounds wonderful," Meera said.

"She was." Danny's voice was steady. Not the forced steadiness of someone suppressing emotion, the genuine steadiness of someone who was, for the first time in a long time, allowing himself to feel something without fighting it. "She was wonderful. And she would have said—" He stopped. Swallowed. "She would have said that you two are exactly the siblings I needed."

The taxi was quiet.

Meera reached across Kabir and took Danny's hand. Danny's fingers closed around hers: not flinching, not pulling away, a hand that had, on a pirate island inside a book, learned that holding on was not the same as holding.

Tukaram purred. The purr was enormous: someone who had traveled between worlds and was now, in the back of a Mumbai taxi, surrounded by the three humans he had decided were his, producing the sound that cats produce when everything is, for the moment, exactly as it should be.


The penthouse was dark when they arrived.

Danny's father was still in Hyderabad. Meera and Kabir's mother was still at the hospital, her shift didn't end until midnight. The flat was empty, the way it always was in the evenings — three children in a space designed for adults, filling the rooms with their separate silences.

But tonight the stillness was different.

Danny didn't go to his Lego room. Meera didn't go to her bedroom to watch Bollywood on her laptop. Kabir didn't go to his room to read.

They stood in the hallway, the three of them, in their ruined uniforms, with a six-toed cat and a stolen book and the shared memory of an impossible adventure; and they looked at each other.

"I'm hungry," Danny said.

"Me too," Kabir said.

"I'll make pasta," Meera said.

"You burn everything," Danny said.

"I'll supervise," Kabir said.

"You're nine. You can't supervise."

"I supervised a cross-dimensional book extraction. I can supervise pasta."

They went to the kitchen. Meera boiled water. Danny found the pasta. Kabir sat on the counter with Tukaram and gave instructions that nobody followed. The kitchen filled with steam and the smell of garlic (Danny's contribution. He was, it turned out, the only one of them who could actually cook) and the sound of three people arguing about whether masala should be added to pasta (Meera: yes, always; Danny: never, that's sacrilege; Kabir: depends on the pasta shape and the emotional state of the cook).

They ate at the dining table, the table where, for six months, they'd eaten in shifts, avoiding each other, maintaining the careful distances of a family that hadn't chosen itself. Tonight they sat together. The evening air was layered with the smell of incense from the neighbour’s puja and the distant, greasy warmth of street food being fried. The pasta was overcooked (Meera's fault) and under-salted (Danny's fault) and served in bowls that didn't match (Kabir's fault, he'd grabbed bowls from three different shelves). Tukaram sat on the rough table and ate a piece of pasta that Danny offered him and then rejected a piece of pasta that Meera offered him, because cats required consistency in their inconsistency.

"We should tell our parents," Meera said.

"Tell them what?" Danny asked. "That their children were sucked into a nineteenth-century adventure novel through a magic bookshop run by three sisters with supernatural abilities, and we fixed a literary corruption by singing Bollywood songs at it?"

"When you put it that way, it sounds ridiculous."

"It IS ridiculous. It happened, but it's ridiculous."

"Some things can be both," Kabir said.

They decided, by unspoken consensus, to tell the abridged version: they'd found a bookshop, made friends with the owner, adopted a cat. The details, the bookworm hole, the island, the pirates, the Arabian Nights, the singing, would remain between them. Their story. Their adventure. The thing that had made them, for the first time, an unit — not three children sharing a flat but three siblings sharing a secret.


Later, after the dishes were washed (Danny) and the cold floor was swept (Meera) and Tukaram had been given a proper meal of tinned tuna from the emergency supplies (Kabir), they sat on the balcony. The ground pressed cold through the fabric of her clothes. The balcony looked out over the Arabian Sea. The Queen's Necklace curved below them, the arc of streetlights along Marine Drive, reflected in the dark water, the most beautiful sight in Mumbai. the warm air was warm. October warm, the kind of warmth that held the city like a hand; and it smelled of salt and exhaust and flowers and a Mumbai smell that was all of these things combined into something that no other city in the world produced.

Kabir held the Arabian Nights. The red leather cover was warm in his rough hands. a warmth that had been inside another book, that had been embedded in a story, that carried within it the residual heat of a fictional sun.

"We should return it," Kabir said. "To Guddi."

"We will," Meera said. "Tomorrow."

"Tomorrow's school."

"After school."

"But what if—"

"The bookshop will be there," Danny said. "It's always there. Even when it moves."

Kabir looked at the book. Opened it. The pages were cool under his fingers, the coolness of old paper, of words that had been waiting to be read for centuries. He turned to the first page. The first story. The story of Scheherazade; the woman who told stories to save her life, who spun narratives for a thousand and one nights, who understood that stories were not entertainment but survival.

He read the first line.

Not aloud, without a word, in his head, the way you were supposed to read dangerous books. The words formed in his mind the way they'd formed in the minds of millions of readers before him — the sounds and images and emotions of a story that had been running for over a thousand years, its engine powered by the accumulated love of everyone who'd ever turned its pages.

He closed the book.

"Kabir?" Meera's voice was soft.

"I just wanted to check that it was okay."

"Is it?"

"It's perfect. The story's running. All the stories are running."

They sat on the balcony and watched the city breathe. The lights and the sea and the million lives being lived below them, each one a story, each one an engine, each one running on the accumulated force of everyone who cared about the person living it.

Danny's phone buzzed. His father. Flight delayed. Will be back Friday. There's dal in the fridge. Don't burn the kitchen.

Meera's phone buzzed. Their mother. Long shift. Will be home by 1. There's roti in the dabba. Make Kabir eat vegetables.

The messages of parents who didn't know what their children had done. Who would come home to find them asleep, safe, in a flat that now had a cat and a secret and the unmistakable warmth of a family that had, in the unlikely setting of a fictional pirate island, become real.

"Goodnight," Meera said.

"Goodnight," Danny said.

"Goodnight," Kabir said.

Tukaram meowed.

They went to their rooms. Three doors closed. Three lights turned off. And in the darkness of a penthouse on Malabar Hill, three children who had traveled between worlds fell asleep: quickly, deeply, the sleep of people who had done something extraordinary and were, at last, home.

On the dining table, the Arabian Nights sat beside a bowl of overcooked pasta and a glass of water with a cat hair floating in it.

The book was quiet. Its story engine hummed; a low, ancient vibration, the sound of a thousand and one nights, of a million readers, of the oldest and most powerful truth that humans have ever discovered:

That stories save us.

That they have always saved us.

That they always will.
