## Chapter 4: The First Night

The sun dropped fast.

Not the slow, theatrical Mumbai sunset that Kabir had grown up watching from the balcony on Malabar Hill, where the light lingered on the Arabian Sea for forty minutes and the sky cycled through colours that Meera catalogued by Bollywood song titles. This sun fell like a stone. One moment it was above the canopy, turning the palm fronds gold. The next it was gone, and the jungle went dark with a speed that felt personal, as if the island had decided that daylight was over and there would be no discussion.

Kabir sat in the mouth of Ben Gunn's cave and watched the darkness arrive.

The cave was halfway up a hillside on the western slope of the island, hidden behind a curtain of vines so thick that you could stand three feet from the entrance and see nothing but green. Ben Gunn had found it during his first month of exile, he said. Three years of solitary habitation had turned it into something between a home and a shrine. the cold floor was packed earth, swept smooth with a palm-frond broom. A fire pit, ringed with stones from the beach, occupied the centre. Animal skins — goat, mostly — served as bedding, and a collection of objects salvaged from the island's various shipwrecks and natural offerings lined the walls: bottles, rope, a compass with a cracked glass, three forks (no knives, Ben Gunn carried his only knife at all times), and an astonishing quantity of goat cheese, wrapped in leaves, stacked in a corner like bricks.

The cheese smelled. There was no polite way to describe it. The smell was aggressive, a living presence in the cave, a fog of fermented dairy that clung to everything it touched and had, over three years, permeated the rock itself. Ben Gunn's clothes smelled of it. His beard smelled of it. the warm air smelled of it. Kabir's school uniform, after two hours in the cave, smelled of it.

Tukaram loved it.

The cat was draped across the cheese stack like a furry guardian, his six-toed paws kneading the leaf wrapping, his purr a deep, grinding vibration that Kabir could feel through the floor. His purr, purpose found, purpose being cheese.

"He won't leave the cheese," Ben Gunn said, poking the fire with a stick. The flames threw his shadow on the cave wall — enormous, distorted, the shadow of three years alone, a silhouette that had become his most reliable companion. "I've tried. Pulled him off. He comes back. Every time. It's like the cheese has got him under a spell."

"Cats like dairy," Kabir said. "It's the fat content. Their tongues have receptors for amino acids and fat but not sweetness. They literally can't taste sugar."

Ben Gunn stared at him.

"You're a peculiar boy."

"I'm a curious boy. There's a difference."

"Is there?"

Kabir thought about this. In the firelight, with the cheese stink wrapping around him like a blanket and the sounds of the jungle pressing against the cave mouth — the clicks and whistles and rustles of a thousand creatures beginning their night shift — the distinction felt less clear than it usually did.

"Curious people ask questions," he said. "Peculiar people make other people uncomfortable. I do both."

Ben Gunn laughed. The laugh was rusty, a machine that hadn't been used in three years and was surprised to find itself still functional. It lingered off the cave walls and startled a bat from the ceiling, which swooped out through the vine curtain with a papery flutter of wings.

"Where did you come from, boy? Truly?"

Kabir had told Jim Hawkins a version of the truth — that he'd read the story, that he knew what was going to happen. Jim had accepted this with the pragmatic flexibility of a fifteen-year-old who'd already encountered pirates, treasure maps, and a one-legged sea cook. Ben Gunn required a different approach. Ben Gunn had been alone for three years. His relationship with reality was, at best, flexible.

"I came from inside a book," Kabir said.

"A book."

"A bookshop, actually. In Mumbai. That's a city in India. In the future. About two hundred and forty years from now."

Ben Gunn's good eye studied him. The bad eye, the one that looked permanently sideways, studied the cave wall.

"Two hundred and forty years," Ben Gunn repeated.

"Yes."

"And in two hundred and forty years, do they have cheese?"

"They have hundreds of kinds. Cheddar. Gouda. Brie. Paneer — that's Indian cheese, made from—"

"Stop." Ben Gunn held up his rough hand. The hand was trembling. "Don't. Don't tell me about cheese I can't have. It's cruel."

"Sorry."

They sat in stillness. The fire crackled. Outside, the jungle sang its night song — a layered, complex, endlessly shifting composition that was nothing like the flat drone of Mumbai traffic and nothing like the subdued of the Malabar Hill penthouse after midnight. This sound was alive. It breathed. It changed direction and volume and pitch from moment to moment, each change signalling something — a predator moving, prey freezing, a territory being claimed or surrendered.

Kabir's skin prickled. Not from cold — the tropical air was warm, heavy, the kind of warmth that stuck to skin like syrup. The prickling was something else. The awareness that he was inside a story. That the ground beneath him, the rock of the cave, the fire, Ben Gunn, the cheese, the jungle — all of it was made of words. Sentences. Paragraphs. The accumulated craft of Robert Louis Stevenson, transformed by whatever magic the bookshop contained into a reality that was indistinguishable from real.

Except it wasn't real.

He could feel the difference. Not see it, not hear it — feel it. A texture beneath the texture. Like the weave of fabric beneath a painting: invisible from the front, but there, always there, the structure that held the image together. The story had a structure. Events moved in a direction. Characters behaved according to patterns that were written, not chosen. The wind blew when the narrative needed atmosphere. the warm sun rose when the plot required morning. The heat pressed against her skin like a warm palm. It was beautiful. And it was terrifying.

"Ben Gunn?"

"Aye?"

"Do you ever feel like you're not... real?"

The firelight made Ben Gunn's face a landscape of shadows and sharp edges. The beard, the wild hair, the one good eye that held an intelligence that three years of solitude had sharpened rather than dulled.

"Every day," he said. "Every day on this island, I wake up and I feel like I'm living a story that someone else wrote. Like the things I do aren't choices but... movements. Like a puppet. Like someone's pulling my strings and I'm dancing."

Kabir's stomach tightened.

"But then I eat cheese," Ben Gunn continued. "And the cheese is real. The taste is real. The smell is certainly real. And I think — if I can taste cheese, if I can feel the sun on my face and the sand between my toes and the cold of the stream water when I drink — then I'm real enough. Real enough for cheese. Real enough for morning. Real enough to keep going."

He looked at Kabir.

"Are you real, boy?"

Kabir touched the cave floor. The stone was cool under his palm — cool and slightly damp, with a gritty texture that he could feel in the ridges of his fingerprints. He picked up a pebble. Smooth, oval, the size of a rupee coin. He pressed it between his thumb and forefinger until the edges bit into his skin, until the pressure became pain, until the pain confirmed that he was here, in this body, in this cave, in this impossible place.

"I'm real," he said.

"Good. Then have some cheese."

He handed Kabir a piece. The cheese was hard, crumbly, the colour of old ivory. It smelled like feet and vinegar and something underneath that was almost sweet, the ghost of the milk it had once been. Kabir put it in his mouth.

The taste was extraordinary. Not good, not bad — extraordinary. Sharp, salty, with a tang that coated the tongue and a richness that spread through the mouth like warmth through cold hands. It was, objectively, the worst cheese Kabir had ever eaten. And it was, subjectively, the most real thing he'd tasted since falling through the bookworm hole.

"Good?" Ben Gunn asked.

"Terrible," Kabir said.

"Yes. But real."

"Real."

Tukaram meowed. Tukaram's expert meow, two days of cheese consumption making him an authority and was offended that the humans were only now catching up.


Kabir didn't sleep.

He tried. He lay on the goatskin, which was stiff and smelled of animal and smoke and cheese (everything smelled of cheese), and he closed his eyes, and he tried to let the jungle sounds become white noise, the way Mumbai traffic became white noise after enough years. But his brain wouldn't stop. The water ran between her fingers, cold and insistent. The OBSERVATIONS notebook was gone. Lost somewhere between the bookshop and the island, somewhere in the space between worlds. Without it, the observations had nowhere to go. They piled up in his head like unopened mail, each one demanding attention, each one connected to three others, the web of questions and answers and further questions that was the operating system of a nine-year-old boy who couldn't stop noticing things.

OBSERVATION: The stars are wrong.

He'd crawled to the cave mouth and looked up. The sky was clear, the darkness between the stars not the hazy grey of Mumbai (where light pollution erased everything but the brightest planets) but a deep, total black that made the stars look closer, sharper, more numerous than Kabir had thought possible. The Milky Way was visible — a river of light across the sky, each point a sun, each sun potentially orbited by planets, each planet potentially home to a boy who was lying in a cave and looking up and wondering.

But the constellations were wrong.

Not completely wrong. The shapes were familiar — Orion, the Big Dipper, the Southern Cross. But their positions were off. Shifted. As if the sky had been rotated a few degrees, or as if Kabir was seeing the stars from a latitude that didn't quite match the island's supposed location.

Because the sky was written, not real.

Stevenson had described a tropical island. He'd described heat and palm trees and parrots. But he hadn't described the stars. The night sky was a gap in the narrative, a place where the story hadn't bothered to specify details, and the story engine had filled the gap with an approximation — a sky that looked like a tropical sky but wasn't precise, wasn't astronomically accurate, because it didn't need to be. No reader had ever complained.

Until now. Until a nine-year-old boy from Mumbai who'd memorised the constellations from a book his mother had given him for his seventh birthday lay in a cave and looked up and noticed that Polaris was three degrees too far west.

The story had limits. It was detailed in the places that mattered to the plot and vague in the places that didn't. The pirates were detailed. The treasure was detailed. The island's geography, insofar as it affected the characters' movements, was detailed. But the stars, the deep jungle, the undersides of rocks, the taste of the cold water, the exact species of the birds — these were impressions, sketches, the literary equivalent of a stage set that looked solid from the audience but was plywood and paint from behind.

Kabir filed this observation. Without paper, he filed it in the place where he'd stored things before the notebook — the labyrinthine, interconnected, ceaselessly expanding archive of his memory.

OBSERVATION: I am inside a machine.

The story was a machine. A story engine, Guddi had called it. And machines had rules. They had inputs and outputs. They had failure modes. The story engine ran on accumulated readers — every person who'd ever opened Treasure Island and followed Jim Hawkins from the Admiral Benbow inn to the island and back contributed energy to the engine. Millions of readers. Over a century. The engine was powerful, immense, the literary equivalent of a hydroelectric dam.

But it was damaged.

The Arabian Nights had fallen into it. A foreign book, a different engine, a different set of stories — embedded in the story's code like a virus in a program. The two engines were interfering with each other. The corruption was spreading. And if it wasn't fixed...

Kabir didn't know what would happen. But he knew it would be bad. You didn't need to understand the engineering of a dam to know that a crack in the rough wall was dangerous.

He lay on his back. The stars shifted overhead — wrong stars, approximate stars, the stars of a story that was running on borrowed time.

He had to fix it.

He didn't know how.

He was nine years old.

But he was also Kabir Mehra, the boy who read fourteen books simultaneously, who asked questions that made adults uncomfortable, who had once explained the second law of thermodynamics to a crow. If anyone could fix a story engine from the inside, it was someone who understood how stories worked. Not as a writer — Kabir wasn't a writer. As a reader. The most dedicated, obsessive, analytically-minded reader that Campion School had ever produced.

The jungle sang. The stars wheeled. Tukaram purred on the cheese stack.

Kabir closed his eyes.

Tomorrow, he would begin.
