## Chapter 7: Ben Gunn's Story

Ben Gunn talked the way water leaked from a cracked pipe — steadily, unstoppably, with a pressure that had been building for three years.

They were sitting on the rocks above the bay, Kabir and the marooned man, on the morning of Kabir's second day inside the story. The bay curved below them in a crescent of white sand, the water so clear that Kabir could see the shadow of every fish and the ripple of every current on the sandy bottom. The Hispaniola rode at anchor in the harbour, her hull dark against the turquoise, her sails furled, the Union Jack hanging limp from her masthead.

Tukaram was hunting crabs. The cat moved across the rocks with the fluid precision of something designed for exactly this terrain — low, quick, each six-toed paw placed with surgical accuracy on the barnacle-crusted stone. Every few minutes he'd pounce, and there'd be a brief, furious scuffle between cat and crab, and the cat would emerge victorious, holding his prey by one claw, his green eyes bright with the satisfaction of mastering a new ecosystem.

"I was born in Bristol," Ben Gunn said. "Seventeen thirty-one. My mother was a washerwoman. My father was a sailor who came home once a year and left again before the washing dried."

Kabir listened. The rock was warm under his legs — the sun-heated warmth of stone that had been baking since dawn, a warmth that seeped through his school shorts and into his thighs and made his muscles loosen in a way that Mumbai's concrete warmth never did.

"I went to sea at twelve. Cabin boy on a merchant vessel, the Prudence. Captain Morrison. He was a hard man but fair, the kind of captain who beat you for stealing but shared his rum when the storms came. I learned to climb rigging and splice rope and navigate by stars. I learned to sleep in a hammock that swung like a pendulum. I learned the taste of salt pork that's been in a barrel for six months — you don't want to know what that tastes like."

"What does it taste like?"

"Imagine the worst thing you've ever eaten."

Kabir thought. "Karela. Bitter gourd. My Aai makes it every Thursday."

"What's it taste like?"

"Like someone extracted the concept of bitterness and put it in a vegetable."

"Salt pork is worse. Salt pork tastes like the ocean died and someone pickled its corpse." Ben Gunn paused. Scratched his beard. Something fell out of the beard — Kabir didn't look closely enough to identify it. "But you eat it because you're at sea and the alternative is starving, and starving is the one thing that tastes worse than salt pork."

The wind shifted. A breeze came off the water, carrying the smell of the ocean — clean, mineral, bottomless, the smell of a body of water so vast that it contained its own weather systems. Mixed with it was the smell of the jungle behind them — rot, growth, flowers, the perfume of a thousand species of plant exhaling simultaneously.

"I was twenty when Flint recruited me. Captain Flint. The worst man I ever met and the best sailor. He could navigate a ship through a hurricane the way your cat navigates those rocks — instinct, no thought, just movement. He was also a murderer, a thief, and a liar, and he laughed when men died. I should have run. But Flint had a way of making piracy seem reasonable. Logical, even. He'd talk about the unfairness of the merchant trade, the cruelty of naval discipline, the theft of labour by the ruling classes — and by the time he'd finished, you'd feel like stealing gold was a political act."

"Was it?"

"It was stealing gold. But it felt like revolution."

Ben Gunn looked at his hands. The hands of a sailor, a pirate, a castaway. The nails were black. The skin was leather. The knuckles were swollen and cracked, the joints deformed by years of hauling rope and breaking rock and the slow, grinding wear of survival without tools or medicine.

"We buried the treasure here. Seven hundred thousand pounds, the haul of a dozen voyages, the accumulated plunder of ten years of piracy. Flint killed six men to keep the location secret. Shot them on this island, one by one, and left their bodies to mark the path. Then he sailed away. And then he died — of rum and fever, in Savannah, cursing and screaming."

"And left you here."

"Not Flint. That was later. I came back with a different crew, three years ago. We were looking for the treasure. We didn't find it. My crewmates decided I was bad luck and left me." He said this flatly, the way you'd describe the weather. "Marooned. One knife, one musket, three charges of powder. That was my inheritance."

Kabir picked up a pebble. Smooth, white, warm from the warm sun. He turned it in his fingers, feeling the weight and texture — the tactile reality of an object that was, technically, made of sentences.

"And the cheese?"

Ben Gunn's face transformed. The mention of cheese did to Ben Gunn what the mention of Bollywood did to Meera — it activated a passion so deep that it bypassed all social filters and emerged as pure, unmediated enthusiasm.

"I found goats! Wild goats, left by some Spanish expedition, breeding on the hills. I caught two — a female and her kid. It took me three weeks. Three weeks of chasing goats through jungle, through streams, up cliffs. The female kicked me in the jaw." He pointed to a gap in his three remaining teeth. "But I got them. And I milked the female. And I made cheese."

"How did you know how to make cheese?"

"My mother was a washerwoman, but her mother — my grandmother — was a dairy maid in Somerset. She made cheddar. Real cheddar, the kind that takes twelve months to age and crumbles when you cut it and has a sharpness that makes your eyes water. She taught me when I was small. I'd sit on the dairy floor and watch her hands working the curd, pressing it into moulds, wrapping it in cloth. The smell of fresh cheese in a cool dairy on a Somerset morning—" He stopped. His good eye was wet. "I haven't thought about that in years."

The stillness was different from the stillnesss Kabir knew. Mumbai silences were rare and brief, interruptions in the city's continuous noise. This silence had depth. It stretched in every direction — up into the sky, out across the water, down into the rock beneath them. It was the silence of a place where one man had lived alone for three years, where the only conversations were between a castaway and his goats, where language itself had rusted from disuse.

"Ben Gunn?"

"Aye?"

"Do you want to go home?"

The question hit the old man like a physical thing. Kabir saw it — the flinch, the tightening of the shoulders, the way his rough hands gripped his knees. The question had touched something that three years of solitude hadn't managed to bury.

"Home," Ben Gunn said. The word came out rough, scraped. "Home is a place you can go back to. I've been a pirate. A marooner. A castaway. England wouldn't have me. Bristol wouldn't have me. My mother's dead by now — she was old when I left. There's nothing to go back to."

"There's cheese."

"What?"

"You said your grandmother made cheddar. Real cheddar. In Somerset. If you got off this island, you could eat real cheese again. Not goat cheese made in a cave. Real, aged, crumbly cheddar."

Ben Gunn stared at him. The stare lasted a long time — long enough for Tukaram to catch another crab, long enough for the Hispaniola's flag to stir in a breeze that Kabir felt as a tickle of cool air on his sweat-damp neck.

"You're a cruel boy," Ben Gunn said. But he was smiling. His smile, hope being offered and feared and accepted all at once and was afraid to accept it and was accepting it anyway.


They spent the afternoon exploring.

Not the island's geography — Kabir had already mapped the major landmarks in his head, cross-referencing Stevenson's descriptions with the physical reality. The stockade was to the east. The pirates' camp was on the south shore, near the beached boats. The tall pine on the ridge, the one that marked the treasure site, was visible from any high point on the island, its crown rising above the canopy like a pointing finger.

What Kabir wanted to explore was the story.

"Tell me about the animals," he said, as they walked through the jungle toward the interior. Ben Gunn led, his bare feet finding the path with an ease that came from three years of walking the same terrain. Kabir followed, his school shoes (the soles now worn smooth) sliding on the leaf litter.

"Animals?"

"Which ones have you seen? List them."

"Goats. Parrots — green ones, with red beaks. Snakes — two kinds, one green and thin, one brown and fat. The green ones are harmless. The brown ones I've never been bitten by, so I can't confirm. Crabs, obviously. Fish in the streams. Lizards. Something large that moves through the jungle at night — I've never seen it, only heard it. The evening air was layered with the smell of incense from the neighbour’s puja and the distant, greasy warmth of street food being fried. the warm air carried the mixed scent of petrol fumes and jasmine from the garland stall. Heavy footsteps. Breathing."

"What kind of breathing?"

"Deep. Slow. Like a bellows."

Kabir filed this. The something-large didn't appear in Treasure Island. Stevenson hadn't written a large nocturnal animal. Which meant it was either an invention of the story engine (filling gaps in the narrative with plausible additions) or an intrusion from the Arabian Nights (where large, supernatural creatures were commonplace).

"What about birds? Besides parrots?"

"Seabirds on the coast. Hawks or eagles, I'm not sure which — something large that circles above the ridgeline. Smaller things in the canopy that I hear but don't see. And Flint."

"Flint?"

"Silver's parrot. The bird, not the dead captain. The parrot that sits on his shoulder and screams 'Pieces of eight!' The bird's been on this island since Silver arrived. Flies to the stockade sometimes. Sits in the trees. Screams."

"A parrot that belongs to a character," Kabir murmured. "Part of the story's code."

"Code?"

"Never mind."

They reached the stream. The water ran clear over a bed of smooth stones, each stone a different colour — grey, brown, white, a pale green that Kabir had never seen in a stone before. He knelt and put his hand in the cold water. Cold. The cold was shocking after the jungle's heat — a sharp, clean cold that made his fingers ache and his wrist tingle and his whole arm feel more alive than it had in days.

He drank. The water tasted of stone and earth and rain. Underneath those tastes, deeper, he could detect something else — a metallic tang, faint but distinct, the taste of a story's infrastructure. The plumbing beneath the fiction. The machinery that kept the water flowing and the trees growing and the sun rising and the narrative proceeding.

"Ben Gunn?"

"Aye?"

"Have you ever found writing on the island? Words? Letters? Text?"

The old man's face changed. The cheerful madness dimmed. Something darker surfaced — not fear exactly, but the memory of fear.

"Once," he said. "About six months ago. In a clearing on the western slope. The ground was covered in writing. Small, like in a book. I couldn't read most of it — the letters were moving, changing. But I recognized some words. 'Buccaneer.' 'Doubloon.' 'Treasure.' Words from my own story."

"What did you do?"

"I ran." He said this without shame. "I'm a coward in the face of things I don't understand. A brave man fights what he can see. A wise man runs from what he can't."

"That's not cowardice. That's pattern recognition."

"Is it?"

"You recognized that something was wrong with the island. You recognized that the writing was dangerous. You made a survival decision based on incomplete information. That's not running away. That's—"

"Being a very fast coward?"

Kabir laughed. The laugh surprised him — it was the first time he'd laughed since falling through the bookworm hole, and the sound felt foreign in the jungle air, too bright, too human, a sound from the real world intruding on the fictional one.

Tukaram appeared from the undergrowth. He was wet — he'd been in the stream, apparently — and his fur was plastered to his body, making him look half his normal size, a sodden, indignant, six-toed creature holding a small fish in his mouth with the expression of someone who had just invented fishing and was very pleased about it.

"Good cat," Kabir said.

Tukaram ate the fish. Head first.

Ben Gunn watched with the fascination of three years without watching another creature eat. "He's a good hunter," he said.

"He's the best cat in the world," Kabir said.

They walked back toward the cave as the afternoon light slanted through the canopy, turning the jungle into a cathedral of green and gold. Kabir's mind was working — processing, connecting, building the model of the story's mechanics that he would need to fix the corruption.

The story was a machine. The machine was broken. And somewhere in the clearing with the moving text, the Arabian Nights was embedded like a bone spur in a joint.

He would fix it. He didn't know how yet. But he would.

The cave appeared ahead, the vine curtain stirring in the evening breeze, the faint smell of cheese reaching them before the entrance was visible.

Home, Kabir thought. For now.

Ben Gunn's hand landed on his shoulder. The touch was light — careful, calibrated touch, gentleness being remembered after years of forgetting. The hand smelled of earth and cheese and the salt of three years' worth of sea air.

"Thank you," Ben Gunn said.

"For what?"

"For listening. For talking to me. For being real." He paused. "I'd forgotten what that felt like."

Kabir put his hand on Ben Gunn's hand. The skin was rough under his palm — callused, scarred, the texture of a life lived hard.

"You're welcome," he said.

They went into the cave. Tukaram followed, his tail held high, the fish still in his mouth. The evening closed around the island like a fist, and the story moved on.
