The scouting mission was Jader's idea.
Three weeks after the crash, the Hybrid attacks on the Redwood perimeter had increased — not in ferocity but in frequency, the pattern suggesting coordination rather than opportunism. Igknamai packs were moving in formations that the Redwood scouts hadn't seen before: wider sweeps, deeper penetrations, probing the defences rather than breaching them. Something was directing them. Something intelligent.
"The Hybrids," Jader said at the war council. The meeting was held on Pepa's platform — the largest communal space in the village, packed with warriors, scouts, and the Alluran crew who had been integrated into the village's defence structure by necessity rather than ceremony. "They're part Akquarian, part something else — creatures bred in the deep forest, half-sentient, capable of controlling Igknamai through pheromone manipulation. They've always been a threat. But this is different. This is strategic."
"How many?" Truro asked. He stood at the platform's edge, his bow across his back, his body positioned where he could see the forest and the meeting simultaneously — the posture of a man who never fully entered a room because he never fully left the trees.
"Three confirmed. Possibly more. Our scouts have tracked them to a compound in the western badlands — underground, fortified, approximately two days' ride from the village." Jader spread a hand-drawn map across the platform floor. The map was beautiful — rendered in coloured inks on stretched bark, the topography indicated by fine cross-hatching that showed elevation, vegetation density, and water sources. "Here."
His finger marked a point west of the village, beyond the Io bird nesting grounds, through territory that the Redwoods avoided. The map showed the area in red ink — the colour of warning.
"What's in the compound?" Rooke asked.
Jader and Truro exchanged a look. The look contained information that words would have contaminated — the specific, grim knowledge of men who had seen something they wished they hadn't and were deciding how much to share.
"People," Truro said. "Women. Taken from the Redwood villages over the past three years. We've tracked disappearances — seventeen confirmed. The Hybrids take them for breeding. To increase their numbers. To create more of themselves."
The room went silent. Not the productive silence of people processing information but the shocked silence of people encountering an evil that exceeded their experiential framework. Eden felt the silence in her stomach — a physical weight, a nausea that was not illness but moral revulsion.
"We're going in," Jader said. "A scouting party. Small. Fast. We need to confirm numbers, map the compound's layout, identify entry points. We're not engaging — not yet. We're gathering intelligence for an assault."
"I'm coming," Eden said.
Every head turned.
"No," Rooke said immediately.
"I didn't ask for permission." Eden looked at Jader. "I'm fast, I'm quiet, and I'm small enough to go places your warriors can't. I've been training with Truro for three weeks. I can track, I can navigate, and I know how Igknamai behave. You need bodies for this mission. I'm volunteering mine."
Jader studied her. The assessment was identical to every assessment he'd given her since the first day — measuring, weighing, judging by criteria that the Redwoods applied to all potential fighters and that had nothing to do with origin, gender, or species.
"She saved Saff," Truro said quietly. "She stood between a child and three Igknamai with a knife."
The statement was not an endorsement. It was evidence. Jader weighed it with the precision of a man whose decisions determined whether people lived or died.
"You ride with Truro," Jader said. "You follow his orders. If he says run, you run. If he says hide, you hide. Clear?"
"Clear."
Rooke's jaw worked. The muscles bunched, released, bunched again — the physical manifestation of an argument being processed and suppressed because the man had lost the right to make decisions about Eden's choices and knew it and was learning, painfully, that losing control was not the same as losing value.
The western badlands earned their name.
The forest changed two hours from the village — the massive, healthy trees giving way to stunted, twisted growth that clawed at the sky like arthritic hands. The soil darkened. The air thickened with a chemical tang that burned Eden's sinuses and left a metallic film on her tongue. The bird calls ceased. The insect percussion faded. Even the wind seemed reluctant to enter.
They rode in a party of six: Jader, Truro, Eden, Guz, and two scouts whose names Eden hadn't learned because they communicated entirely through hand signals and facial expressions that conveyed more information than most people's sentences.
The horses grew nervous. Truro's mount — a grey mare named Io, after the birds — flicked her ears constantly, testing the air for threats that her rider couldn't detect. Eden felt the mare's tension through her thighs, through the saddle, through the leather reins that transmitted every twitch and shiver from the animal's body to her own.
"Dismount," Jader signalled. They tied the horses in a sheltered hollow where a stream provided water and the remaining healthy trees offered cover. From here, they went on foot.
The compound was underground — built into a rocky hillside, its entrance concealed by a cascade of hanging vines that had been trained to grow in a curtain. Without Jader's scouts, Eden would have walked past it. The concealment was not just effective — it was artistic, the vines arranged to mimic natural growth patterns so convincingly that even the forest seemed fooled.
Truro found a vantage point — a rock outcropping above the entrance, accessible by climbing a dead tree whose bark flaked off in Eden's hands as she ascended, dry and brittle, smelling of rot and the specific desiccation of organic matter that had died slowly, cell by cell, poisoned by whatever the Hybrids were doing to the soil.
From the outcropping, they could see down through a gap in the vine curtain into the compound's entry chamber.
Eden's breath stopped.
The chamber was carved from rock — rough, functional, lit by bioluminescent fungi that cast the space in a sickly green glow. Equipment lined the walls: metal structures, tubing, containers of liquid that caught the green light and reflected it in shades of amber and red. The equipment was medical. Eden recognised it — not the specific devices, which were alien, but the configuration, the sterile arrangement, the purposeful layout of a facility designed to process bodies.
And the beds.
Twelve beds, arranged in two rows. Each one occupied by a woman. Each woman connected to the equipment by tubes that entered their arms, their chests, their abdomens. Some were conscious — their eyes open, staring at the green-lit ceiling with the blank, exhausted gaze of people who had stopped hoping. Some were not.
One woman's belly was swollen with pregnancy.
Eden's hand found Truro's arm. Not for support — for anchor. To prevent herself from dropping into the compound with nothing but a knife and the pure, white-hot rage of a woman who had just encountered an evil that the word evil could not adequately contain.
Truro's hand covered hers. His grip was iron. "Not now," he breathed. "We came to see. We saw. Now we plan."
"They're breeding them," Eden whispered. The words were ash in her mouth. "Like livestock. Like—"
"I know." His voice was the voice of a man who had known this for months, who had tracked the disappearances, who had suspected the truth and now had it confirmed and was holding the confirmation like a burning coal because dropping it would mean losing control and losing control would mean rushing in and rushing in would mean dying and dying would mean the women in those beds would never be freed.
"We come back," he said. "With enough warriors to tear this place apart."
"When?"
"Soon. As soon as Jader can muster the force." His eyes met hers in the green gloom. "I swear it, Eden. We're coming back for them."
They withdrew. Silently. Down the dead tree, through the twisted forest, to the horses waiting in the hollow. The ride back was wordless. Six people carrying knowledge that burned and planning the fire they would set in return.
Eden didn't speak until they reached the village. Then she found Rooke, who was sitting with the communication array, his hands covered in crystal dust, his face lit by the device's pale pulse.
"I know what the Hybrids are doing," she said. "And I know why we have to fight."
Rooke looked at her. Whatever he saw in her face — the horror, the rage, the determination that had replaced the ambivalence she'd been wearing for weeks — it shifted something in him. The captain surfaced. Not the defensive, emotionally constipated captain who traded crew members for technology. The real captain. The one who had earned his command by making hard decisions in impossible situations and living with the consequences.
"Tell me everything," he said.
She did.
