Three days into their stay with the Redwoods, Eden discovered she knew nothing about survival.
She had spent four years on a spacecraft — a controlled environment where air was manufactured, food was synthesised, and danger came in predictable forms: equipment failure, radiation spikes, navigational errors. Survival in space was a matter of protocol. Survival in the forest was a matter of humility.
Truro taught her the difference.
He appeared on the third morning at the base of the Great Tree — the massive trunk that held Pepa's platform and the guest quarters where Eden's crew had been housed. He stood in the early light with a bow across his back and the specific stillness of a man who had been waiting long enough that the forest had stopped noticing him. His skin was the colour of turned earth. His hair — black, long, tied with a leather cord — fell past his shoulders. His eyes were the grey-green of river stones, and they held an expression that was not friendliness but something more useful: competence.
"You need to learn the forest," he said. No preamble. No introduction beyond the name Jader had given in passing: Truro, our best tracker. "If you're staying — even temporarily — you need to know what will kill you and what won't."
"Is the list long?" Eden asked.
"The killing list or the safe list?"
"Both."
"The killing list is longer." He turned and walked. The invitation was implicit.
Eden followed.
The forest was not one thing. It was a thousand things layered — a palimpsest of ecosystems stacked vertically from the root floor to the canopy crown, each layer operating by its own rules, hosting its own inhabitants, maintaining its own balance. Truro moved through these layers the way a musician moved through scales: instinctively, fluidly, with an awareness that encompassed everything without fixating on anything.
"This root," he said, crouching beside a gnarled extrusion that crossed the path like a sleeping serpent. His fingers traced the bark — reverent, precise. "Bloodroot. The sap is red. Undiluted, it'll stop a wound from bleeding. Diluted in water, it's a painkiller. Boiled? Poison. Same plant. Three applications. The forest doesn't care about your intentions — it responds to your preparation."
Eden crouched beside him. The bark was warm under her fingertips — warmer than she expected, as if the root carried the tree's metabolic heat to its extremities. The red sap was visible at a crack in the surface — a vivid crimson that looked like blood and smelled of copper and something astringent that tightened her nostrils.
"How do you know which application someone needs?" she asked.
"You listen to the wound." Truro looked at her. This close, she could see the fine scars on his hands — thin white lines that crisscrossed his knuckles and fingers like a map of every blade he'd ever held, every branch he'd ever gripped, every surface that had tested his skin and found it willing. "Every wound tells you what it needs. A bleeding cut asks for pressure and sap. A fever asks for dilution and rest. A poisoned body—" He paused. "A poisoned body asks for nothing. It's already decided. You have to decide faster."
He stood. Moved on. Eden followed, cataloguing: the plant with broad leaves that filtered water through its stems (safe), the vine with tiny white flowers that paralysed insects on contact (lethal), the mushroom that glowed faint blue at its gills and tasted, Truro said, of roasted chestnuts and was the most nutritious single food source in the forest.
"Taste," he said, breaking off a piece and handing it to her.
Eden hesitated. Then ate. The mushroom was extraordinary — dense, meaty, with a flavour profile that started at roasted chestnut and evolved through something smoky and finished with an aftertaste of honey that lingered on her palate like a whispered secret.
"Good?" Truro asked.
"Incredible."
"Remember the blue gills. That's how you identify it. Everything else that glows in this forest will kill you."
Eden stored the information alongside the growing archive of forest knowledge that Truro was constructing in her mind — a library of survival built one lesson at a time, each entry filed under the heading of a specific texture, scent, colour, or taste.
Archery was harder.
Truro's bow was taller than Eden and carved from the same dark wood as the Redwood archers' weapons — a wood that Truro called ironbark, which bent only under specific conditions and held its tension for decades. The string was sinew — animal gut twisted and waxed until it was stronger than any synthetic cord Eden had encountered on the ship.
"Draw," Truro said.
Eden drew. The string resisted — not like pulling a lever or pushing a button, the kind of mechanical resistance that yielded to force — but like pulling against a living thing, a resistance that tested her strength and then tested her endurance and then tested her will and found all three wanting. The string stopped at half-draw. Her arms trembled. Her shoulder — still bruised from the crash — screamed.
"Release."
She released. The arrow flopped forward, struck the ground four feet in front of her, and lay there like a rebuke.
"Again."
She drew again. The string bit into her fingers — three fingers, the way Truro had shown her, the bowstring seated in the grooves between the first and second knuckles where the skin was thinnest and the nerves were closest to the surface. The pain was specific, localized, immediate.
"Your body is fighting the bow," Truro said. He stood behind her — close enough that she could feel the warmth radiating from his chest, smell the leather of his vest, the clean sweat of a man who moved through the forest like the forest was an extension of his body. "Stop fighting. The bow is not your enemy. The bow is a conversation. You provide the energy. The bow provides the direction. The arrow is the sentence you're both trying to speak."
He reached around her. His hands — warm, calloused, scarred — covered hers on the bow. He drew with her. The string came back smoothly this time, powered by his strength layered over hers, the mechanical disadvantage compensated by the sheer competence of a man who had been having this conversation with bows since childhood.
"Feel that?" he said. His breath was warm against her ear. Pine and leather and the scent of someone who lived so entirely within the forest that the forest had become his cologne.
"Yes," Eden said. Her heart was doing something complicated — a rhythm that had nothing to do with archery and everything to do with proximity, with warmth, with the specific chemistry of a body responding to another body's nearness in ways that predated civilisation.
"That's the conversation. Now release."
She released. The arrow flew. Not perfectly — it wobbled, drifted left, struck the target tree ten inches from the mark Truro had carved. But it flew. It embedded. It stayed.
"Better," Truro said. He stepped back. The warmth departed. The air between them cooled. "Tomorrow we'll work on aim."
Eden looked at the arrow in the tree. Her fingers were raw — three red grooves where the string had bitten. Her shoulder ached. Her arms trembled with this specific fatigue of muscles that had been asked to perform outside their experience.
But the arrow was in the tree. She had put it there. With her body, her breath, her hands, and the borrowed strength of a man who spoke to bows the way poets spoke to words.
She would learn this. She would learn all of it — the forest, the bow, the language of roots and mushrooms and killing vines. Not because survival demanded it, though it did. But because Truro was teaching her, and being taught by him felt like being seen — clearly, completely, without the filters that Alluran society applied to every interaction.
In the forest, she was not Eden the crew member. Not Eden the orphan. Not Eden the woman who had lost her family and then lost her planet and now had lost her ship.
She was a student. And the forest was the most honest classroom she'd ever entered.
