## Chapter Two: The Canopy Village

The horses were real.

Eden had expected alien mounts — scaled beasts, perhaps, or creatures with too many legs and the wrong number of eyes. Instead: horses. Brown, muscular, warm-flanked horses whose breath came in clouds that smelled of hay and the sour-sweet tang of digestion. Their bridles were leather — hand-stitched, worn smooth by years of use, lacking the metal bits that Alluran riders favoured. They responded to pressure, to voice, to the subtle shift of a rider's weight that communicated intent without the need for pain.

Guz — the young man with dark, pitted skin and friendly brown eyes — helped Eden mount. His hands were callused and steady. The horse beneath her was warm through the leather trousers she wore, its barrel chest expanding and contracting with that specific rhythm of an animal that was patient, well-fed, and accustomed to carrying strangers who didn't know how to ride.

"Hold here," Guz said, placing her hands on the leather neck strap. "She'll follow the group. Don't fight her."

He swung up behind Eden with an ease that spoke of a lifetime in the saddle. The warmth of his body against her back was immediate and disorienting — too intimate for strangers, too necessary for a woman whose hands were shaking and whose ribs ached and whose brain was still processing the fact that humans existed on an uncharted planet in a galaxy that was supposed to be empty.

They rode.

The forest moved around them — or they moved through the forest; the distinction blurred. The trees were enormous. Eden had seen redwoods on Earth in archived footage — the ancient forests that had survived the climate wars and been preserved under government protection — but these were larger. Their trunks were the width of buildings. Their bark was rough and deeply grooved, the colour of dried blood, and when the horses passed close enough to touch, Eden felt the bark's texture against her fingertips: warm, alive, vibrating with the subsonic hum of sap moving through vessels wider than her arm.

The canopy above was a second sky — green, layered, filtering the sunlight into bands of gold and shadow that fell across the riders in alternating warmth and coolness. The air was thick with scent: pine resin, leaf mulch, the mushroom-earth smell of decay that was not death but transformation — the forest consuming itself and being reborn in the same breath.

Birds she couldn't see produced sounds she couldn't classify — not songs but conversations, complex and overlapping, the avian equivalent of a market crowd. Insects added percussion: clicks, buzzes, the staccato of wings that were iridescent and gone before Eden's eyes could track them.

They rode for an hour. Then the forest changed.


The village was not on the ground.

It was in the trees — built into them, around them, between them — a civilisation of platforms, bridges, and structures that occupied the canopy layer with the architectural confidence of a people who had never considered the ground a viable option.

Eden's neck craned. Wooden platforms circled the massive trunks at various heights, connected by rope bridges that swayed gently in the breeze. Structures — houses, she realised, with walls of woven bark and roofs of layered leaves — perched on branches thick enough to support them. Smoke rose from cooking fires. Laundry hung from lines strung between trunks. Children's laughter descended from somewhere above, bright and irreverent, the sound of normalcy in an extraordinary setting.

"Nux," Oz breathed behind her. His voice held wonder — genuine, unguarded, the wonder of a man whose size usually prevented him from being surprised by anything. "They built a city in the trees."

The horses stopped at the base of the largest tree. A staircase spiralled up its trunk — not carved into the wood but built around it, wooden steps bolted to the bark with the precision of people who respected the tree's living architecture. The steps were worn smooth by generations of feet.

Jader dismounted first. "Leave the horses. They'll be cared for." He gestured upward. "Follow me. The Elder is expecting you."

The climb took ten minutes. Eden's injured shoulder protested with each step — a dull, grinding ache that sharpened to a lance whenever she used her left arm to grip the railing. The railing itself was remarkable: a single length of polished wood, seamless, that followed the staircase's spiral without joint or interruption. Someone had carved it from a single branch. The effort required was staggering. The beauty achieved was effortless.

At the first platform, Eden looked down and immediately wished she hadn't. The ground was eighty feet below — a distant, shadowed floor of fallen leaves and root systems that looked like the veins of the earth exposed. Vertigo pressed against her temples. She gripped the railing harder. The wood was warm under her palm, sun-soaked, alive.

"Don't look down," Zamya said beside her. The doctor's voice was clinical. "Fix your eyes on the next step. Your vestibular system will adjust in approximately ninety seconds."

"Is that medical advice or a guess?"

"Both. Move."

They climbed.


The Elder lived at the top.

Her name was Pepa, and she occupied a platform that was not a room but an ecosystem — a broad, circular space open to the sky on one side, enclosed by woven bark walls on the other three, furnished with cushions, rugs, hanging plants, and the accumulated evidence of a life spent nurturing everything within reach. Clay pots held herbs. Wooden shelves held jars of preserved food — fruits in syrup, dried meats, something that looked like jam and smelled like heaven. The air was thick with the fragrance of cooking: a grain porridge bubbling over a small fire, its steam carrying notes of honey and crushed seed and something spicy that tingled at Eden's sinuses.

Pepa herself was small, brown, and ancient. Her face was a map of decades — deep lines that tracked from the corners of her eyes to her jaw, each one a record of laughter or grief or weather. Her hands were the hands of a woman who had never stopped working: strong, gnarled, the knuckles swollen but the fingers still deft as she stirred the porridge with a wooden spoon and assessed the strangers her scouts had delivered.

"Sit," she said. The word was not a request. It was the verbal equivalent of a grandmother pushing a plate of food toward a child: resistance was structurally impossible.

They sat. On cushions stuffed with something that smelled of dried lavender and gave under their weight like a gentle argument. The fire's warmth reached them — not aggressive heat but the kind of warmth that untied the knots in muscles that had been clenched since the crash, the warmth that said: You are inside now. The forest is outside. The difference matters.

Pepa ladled porridge into clay bowls and handed them around. The bowls were rough-fired, imperfect, each one slightly different. The porridge was extraordinary — thick, nutty, sweetened with honey that tasted of wildflowers, the spice a slow burn at the back of the throat that intensified and then faded into warmth. Eden ate. She hadn't realised how hungry she was until the first spoonful — and then the hunger arrived all at once, a wave that crashed through her, and she ate the way survivors eat: without pause, without manners, without anything except the desperate gratitude of a body that had been given what it needed.

Pepa watched them eat. Her dark eyes moved from face to face with this attention of a woman who read people the way literate people read books — fluently, rapidly, with comprehension that operated on multiple levels simultaneously.

"You fell from the sky," she said. Not a question.

"Our ship crashed," Rooke confirmed. He held his bowl in both hands but hadn't eaten. His jaw was still bruised, his eyes still scanning — the posture of a commander who did not relax in unknown territories, who assessed exits and threats before accepting comfort. "We're from a planet called Allura. We need to—"

"Eat first," Pepa said. "Talk after."

Rooke opened his mouth to argue. Pepa pointed at his bowl with the wooden spoon. The spoon dripped porridge. The drip was not threatening. The authority behind it was.

Rooke ate.

Zamya leaned toward Eden. "I like her," she whispered. The whisper smelled of porridge and relief.

Eden watched Pepa return to the fire, stirring, humming, the sound of a woman who had hosted strangers before and would host them again and understood that the first thing strangers needed was not information but nourishment.

The porridge was warm. The cushions were soft. The fire crackled. And for the first time since the ship screamed, Eden felt something loosen in her chest — not safety, exactly, but the possibility of safety, which was its own form of grace.

Outside, the canopy village hummed with the sounds of living: children, cooking, conversation, that orchestra of a community that had endured long enough to normalise the extraordinary.

Eden ate her porridge. The honey was sweet. The spice was warm. The fire was kind.

She was not home. But she was not falling.
